Steven N. Carter, MD, FACS, FASCRS is a board certified Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is also board certified in General Surgery. Having performed more robotic colon and rectal cases than anyone else in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma metro area, he is dedicated to pushing the envelope in surgical technique. He recently moved his practice from the Lake Hefner area to Norman Regional and Saint Anthony’s to spend more time with his two children, Henry, Brooks and Monroe, and his wife, Dr. Allison Carter.
Dr. Carter moved to Lawton when he was 3 and graduated from Lawton – Eisenhower. He then attended the University of Oklahoma graduating Summa cum Laude. He then pursued a medical degree followed by a general surgery residency at the OU Health Sciences center in OKC. He was named outstanding surgical resident while there and presented numerous times to scientific meetings.
Dr. Carter was one of the first to leave OU and pursue advanced training in Colon and Rectal surgery. He saw how many people in this area were undergoing surgeries by general surgeons that only perform a few of these cases a year. This was radically different than the experiences of patients in other metropolitan areas. He competed the Colon and Rectal Residency at Baylor University Medical Center. Following this he went in to practice in Oklahoma. He quickly adapted robotic surgery to assist with the difficult anatomy of the pelvis in rectal cancer.
Dr. Carter is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. He is an instructor for advanced trauma courses as well as volunteers his time to prepare general surgery residents for the oral boards.
When not at the hospital, Dr. Carter is playing with his three children and wife. They enjoy trips to the OKC Zoo, cooking, and working on their thriving garden. His wife, an OBGYN, practices in Norman. They both can be found at Owen field on Saturdays in the fall.
